Hellpods
Hellpods
Description
Hellpods are single-use orbital insertion capsules used by Orion Hegemony infantry to deliver soldiers from fleet altitude directly to a planetary surface. Each pod is a roughly cylindrical shell of tungsten and ablative ceramic, sized to carry approximately one squad (8–12 soldiers) in sealed harnesses. Interior surfaces are lined with crash gel that conforms to the occupant's armoured body and absorbs impact deceleration. The pod's outer skin burns and ablates during atmospheric entry, shedding heat. Retro-thrusters fire in the final seconds of descent to bleed terminal velocity before impact. On landing, a pyrotechnic bolt fires to blow the hatch, releasing the squad immediately into combat.
Hellpods are fired in salvos from orbital railgun tubes aboard fleet vessels, delivering an entire platoon or company simultaneously across a landing zone. The approach is intentionally violent, the pods are designed to be disposable, and the occupants are expected to exit fighting.
Known colloquially among Voidborn troops as "Iron Seeds", this is the term used exclusively in B1 manuscript prose. "Hellpods" appears to be the official Hegemony military designation.
Capabilities
- Hypersonic atmospheric entry from orbital altitude
- Ablative ceramic and tungsten outer shell sheds entry heat
- Crash gel interior cushions squad occupants through deceleration forces
- Retro-thruster array fires in final descent phase to reduce impact velocity
- Explosive bolt hatch blows on landing for immediate squad egress
- Can deliver approximately one squad per pod; salvo-fired for company-strength assaults
- TITAN MK-V armour's reactor and seals are rated to survive Hellpod entry loads
Weaknesses / Counters
- No manoeuvring capability during descent, trajectory is fixed at launch
- Outer formation pods are exposed to anti-air defences during approach
- Obsidian and hard volcanic terrain can buckle the hull on impact, potentially trapping or killing occupants (Volcanus Prime drop, B2 Ch.6: multiple pods lost to terrain impact and anti-air fire)
- Swarm anti-air spore launchers and bioform interceptors can destroy pods during final approach
- No stealth, a salvo drop is visible from orbit and announces the assault
- Catastrophic loss rates are considered acceptable by Hegemony doctrine; 40% pod loss recorded at Volcanus Prime
Known Users
- Orion Hegemony front-line infantry
- Commander Kael Draven's squad (Caliban Prime drop, B1 Ch.1)
- Draven's reinforced company (Volcanus Prime drop, B2 Ch.6)
Key Appearances
| Event | Source |
|---|---|
| Squad fires in Hellpods from the Indomitus to Caliban Prime; pods survive hypersonic entry and land in hive city outskirts | Hive Awakens, Ch.1 |
| Second major drop to Volcanus Prime; anti-air spore launchers destroy outer formation pods; 40% of pods lost; hull buckling on obsidian terrain kills further soldiers | The Burning Frontier, Ch.6 |
Notes
- No recovery or re-use of Hellpod hulls is mentioned; they are treated as single-use expendables
- Interior crash gel is described as conforming to TITAN MK-V armour geometry, implying pods are armour-rated by default
- Drop operations are coordinated with fleet railgun batteries; individual pod targeting is fixed at the moment of firing
- Aliases: "Iron Seeds" (Voidborn colloquial term, used exclusively in B1 manuscript prose)
