The Charred Rim
The Charred Rim
Description
The Charred Rim is a frontier region of volcanic hellscapes, a deployment zone described as "volcanic landscapes" where "the ground itself is on fire." Soldiers with boots too large and conscript IDs still etched in their gorgets will die screaming there, their blood feeding soil that has never known life. The name evokes a burned, cinderous border territory at the edge of explored or controlled space.
The Swarm has spent six months fortifying the Charred Rim before the Hegemony's Volcanus Prime campaign launches. The terrain features:
- Volcanic highlands, lava tubes, obsidian formations, magma channels.
- No clear lines of sight; no established defensive positions.
- Thermal activity produces interference that degrades Swarm psionic coordination, but also negates Hegemony doctrine advantages.
- The largest contested world is Volcanus Prime (the "heart of Swarm occupation in this sector").
Draven describes the Charred Rim to his conscripts: "This is not traditional combat terrain. The Swarm chose this ground because it negates every advantage Hegemony doctrine gives you." (B2 Ch02)
Beyond combat, the Charred Rim is also Draven's original escape plan: the squad intends to "disappear into the Charred Rim" after Caliban Prime and wage guerrilla war from the shadows. (B1 Ch25)
Strategic Importance
- Heart of Swarm occupation in this sector of the galaxy; entrenched Hive complexes with 6 months of fortification.
- Volcanic environment is specifically chosen by the Swarm to negate Hegemony military doctrine.
- The Swarm's primary hive complex on Volcanus Prime (the Ashen Caldera) is the target for the Necrotide biological weapon deployment.
- Draven notes the Swarm is "seeding" the Charred Rim's outer systems with spores for future expansion. (B1 Ch25)
- Key worlds include Volcanus Prime and at least several unnamed secondary volcanic worlds (confirmed by Director Kelos's holographic overview in B2 Ch05).
Known Areas / Sub-locations
- Volcanus Prime, Largest and most strategically significant world in the Charred Rim; primary Hive complex; site of the Book 2 campaign. See separate location entry.
- [Multiple unnamed volcanic worlds], Director Kelos shows secondary Swarm installations distributed across the volcanic highlands of the Charred Rim at the operational briefing (B2 Ch05).
- Dead stars / debris fields, The furthest extents of the Charred Rim are described as "beyond the reach of Orion's sensors... a graveyard of the galaxy... where radiation storms scoured the hulls of ancient wrecks and the light of the suns dared not touch." (B1 Ch25 epilogue)
Inhabitants
- Chitin Brood in massive numbers: 8–12 million bioforms confirmed on Volcanus Prime alone; Swarm presence across multiple worlds.
- Orion Hegemony military forces: 200,000 Voidborn 2.0 conscripts deployed for the campaign (B2 Ch07).
- [PROVISIONAL] Civilian populations unclear; the volcanic nature of the worlds may preclude significant civilian presence.
