Caliban Prime
Caliban Prime
Description
Caliban Prime was once a jewel of the Orion Hegemony's expansionist crown, a "Model Colony" designed to demonstrate to frontier worlds the benefits of Imperial order. Wide, symmetrical streets lined with bioluminescent trees imported from the Core Worlds; sleek curves of glass and steel architecture free of industrial grime. It also served as a significant Hegemony research facility.
After Swarm assimilation, the planet transforms into a biological nightmare. Atmospheric spores shut down long-range communications and disrupt carrier waves. The sky is a bruised violet. The jungle that replaces the terraformed zones glows with bioluminescent pulses, neon violet veins running through cracked pavement, throbbing in time with an alien heartbeat. The air carries biological toxins lethal to unprotected humans within minutes. The "Terraform Anomaly" (as the Voidborn call it) consists of calcified fungal growths, gangrenous yellows, bone-whites, and mottled purples, nothing green.
By the end of B1, Protocol 7 orbital bombardment turns the entire surface into "a sea of molten glass." The mountains become glass and the oceans become steam. By the B2 opening, Caliban Prime is described as "a swirling marble of charcoal and angry molten orange."
Strategic Importance
- Major Hegemony research facility; contained valuable scientific and intelligence data.
- Location of the Genesis Project research: the origin point of Swarm bioweapon development.
- The Primarch sample recovered here (from the Governor's Hybrid form) would have provided definitive proof of Swarm biology, and, if the Genesis Logs are correct, evidence of Hegemony culpability.
- First confirmed contact with Swarm assimilation / Hybrid programme.
- Site of the Voidborn squad's defection and rebirth as the Ronin.
Known Areas / Sub-locations
- Colony Plaza, Central civic square; fountain with statue of High Executor Valka; drop landing zone for Voidborn (B1 Ch02). Site of first contact with Swarm.
- Governor's Spire, White ferro-concrete monolith in the city centre; symbol of Hegemony authority. The Hybrid Primarch (Governor's form) commands from the balcony. Destroyed by Indomitus orbital lance strike (B1 Ch13).
- Security Hub (Sector 4 Administration), Squat brutalist bunker; subterranean levels; independent air filtration; designed to withstand orbital bombardment. Contains security footage proving colonists walked willingly into spore clouds. (B1 Ch05)
- Fuel Depot (Sector 9), Site of Echo Squad's last known position; perimeter fence torn open by immense physical force; site of Vos's battle and detonation. (B1 Ch06)
- Caliban Prime Spaceport, Vast landing pads and docking arms; control tower; site of final battle and extraction. Destroyed by Protocol 7. (B1 Ch07–12)
- Water Filtration Plant, Former civic water processing facility; converted by the Swarm into a Red Tide assimilation facility for processing compatible humans into Hybrids. Destroyed by Jerrick's improvised detonation (B1 Ch15).
- Arboretum / Jungle Districts, Bio-luminescent alien jungle that consumed the city's outer districts; violet mists; razor-vines; fungal trees with acidic roots.
- Research Station Omicron, Hardened bunker in the foothills, 40+ km from the main colony; independent fusion reactor; long-range transmitters. Primary survival objective for the Voidborn squad post-bombardment. Site of the final three-way battle between Voidborn, Swarm, and Prime Ascendancy. (B1 Ch09–22)
- Primary Transmitter Array, Communications spire on Research Station Omicron; S'kaar uses it to broadcast the Pilgrim signal before being sealed inside (B1 Ch22).
- Underground Nest / Hive Tunnels, Subterranean Swarm tunnel network beneath the colony and Research Station Omicron; contains the recruitment chamber / Red Tide pool. (B1 Ch18–21)
Inhabitants
- Originally: Hegemony colonists, researchers, a civilian Governor.
- After assimilation: Swarm Drones, Brood-Kin Warriors, Hybrid humans (including the Governor and the S'kaar Hybrid). Elite Hunter-class Brood-Kin active as apex predators.
- Civilian survivors (pre-bombardment): Jerrick and a small group of unassimilated colonists hiding in the mountains.
- Machine forces (temporary): Prime Ascendancy Sentinel Warforms during the B1 Ch22 battle.
