Free Legion
Overview
The Free Legion is a separatist insurgent movement active in the Orion Hegemony's frontier sectors. They are described as spreading "sedition" and conducting armed uprisings against Hegemony rule. The Hegemony uses Free Legion activity as a pretext for Voidborn deployments, the Caliban Prime mission is initially framed as a Free Legion uprising, though this proves false. Draven's memories of the Helios massacre (burning a civilian village of farmers who "only wanted freedom") suggest that Free Legion sympathisers are ordinary frontier colonists ground down by Imperial neglect and conscription rather than organised terrorists.
NOTE: The Free Legion appears exclusively in Book 1. It is not mentioned in Book 2, which focuses on the larger Swarm War and Valka's internal purge. Its relationship to the broader resistance movements that emerge after the Genesis Logs broadcast is not established in the text.
Structure & Hierarchy
No formal command structure is described in the text. Known characteristics:
- Active in frontier sectors of the Hegemony.
- Uses graffiti, barricades, armed resistance as tactics (described as expected signs that Draven looks for on Caliban Prime).
- Likely composed of colonists, miners, and frontier workers exploited by Hegemony extraction quotas.
- Has cells active in at least the Caliban sector and the Helios Prime region.
Goals & Motivations
- Freedom from Hegemony rule and Imperial oppression.
- Resistance against conscription, resource extraction, and the indifference of the Core Worlds to frontier suffering.
- [PROVISIONAL] May be exploited by the Swarm for recruitment: "The frontier worlds... they're starving, forgotten, angry at Orion. The Swarm comes and offers them unity. Purpose. A full belly." (Draven, B1 Ch06)
- Thrace notes the danger: "If the colonies find out the Swarm isn't just eating people, but 'saving' them... the Free Legion will have a field day. Or mass defections." (B1 Ch06)
Resources & Capabilities
- Unknown; described only in the context of frontier guerrilla resistance.
- Uses graffiti slogans, barricades, improvised weapons (implied).
- Has intelligence networks: active enough to be tracked by Orion Intelligence.
