Biology
The Swarm Drone is the most numerous Chitin bioform: a bipedal organism approximately 1.5–1.8 metres tall, with a lightweight chitinous exoskeleton in mottled grey-brown colouration. The drone's limbs are elongated and end in raking claws. Its head is a low, armoured mass with cluster-lens eyes providing wide-angle visual coverage. Drones are grown in bulk from hive biomass and have minimal individual mass compared to warrior-caste bioforms. Their exoskeleton provides basic ballistic resistance, adequate against unaugmented opponents but insufficient against TITAN MK-V weapons.
Behaviour & Intelligence
Drones operate primarily on directed Hive Mind instinct with minimal individual decision-making. They respond to psionic broadcast commands from the Hive Mind, routing around obstacles, swarming chokepoints in mass rushes, and dying without hesitation to enable higher-caste bioforms to advance. Individual drones do not exhibit tactical reasoning; their effectiveness is entirely a function of numbers and coordination. A drone severed from Hive Mind contact (neural disruption, psionic interference) becomes erratic and non-functional.
Capabilities
- Raking claw attacks effective against unarmoured or lightly armoured targets
- Effective in mass: coordinated swarm rushes overwhelm defensive positions through attrition
- Produced at extremely high volume, hive biomass can generate drone cohorts rapidly
- Low metabolic cost to maintain: drones consume minimal biomass compared to higher castes
- Can carry simple biological weapons (spore sacs, acid glands) depending on specialisation
- Psionic coordination allows complex attack patterns despite low individual intelligence
Weaknesses / Counters
- Lightweight exoskeleton is defeated by TITAN MK-V standard weapons at all ranges
- Individually ineffective against armoured opponents
- Complete dependence on Hive Mind coordination: disrupted or isolated drones are non-functional
- No adaptive capability at the individual level, cannot respond to novel situations without Hive direction
- High-rate weapons (rotary cannon, explosive ordnance) defeat drone swarms efficiently through volume
Relationship to Hive
Drones are the Hive's expendable substrate, produced in quantity specifically to be sacrificed. They are the lowest tier of the Swarm's biomass hierarchy and receive minimal Hive Mind attention. Their value is aggregate, not individual.
